Three House Democrats are pushing the Food and Drug Administration for answers on why it still hasn’t finalized its proposed ban on formaldehyde in hair products.

Reps. Nydia Velázquez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Shontel Brown of Ohio sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Robert Califf earlier this week questioning multiple deadline setbacks.

FDA announced the sweeping proposal last October and set a goal to have a final rule out by April, but later bumped the deadline to July. In its latest regulatory agenda, FDA set the deadline back a third time, aiming for finalization in September.

The three lawmakers want Califf to explain the factors that “contributed to the two-time delay.” They also want to know of any concerns FDA has about health harms in the rule’s absence and agency outreach efforts.
